Description

MOLYKOTE 111 Compound Silicone Lubricant & Sealant

MOLYKOTE 111 Compound is a silicone-based lubricant and sealant designed for O-rings, gaskets, seals, valves, vacuum systems and pressure systems. Formerly sold under the Dow Corning name as Dow Corning 111 Silicone Compound, MOLYKOTE 111 combines a silicone oil base with an inorganic thickener to provide low volatility, excellent water resistance and a wide service-temperature range.

For aircraft maintenance applications, MOLYKOTE 111 is particularly useful for lubricating and protecting compatible rubber and plastic O-rings, gaskets and seals, as well as for sealing vacuum and pressure connections. The compound has a service-temperature range of -40°F to 400°F (-40°C to 204°C). Always verify lubricant compatibility and the applicable aircraft or component maintenance documentation before use.

MOLYKOTE 111 Features & Benefits

  • Wide service-temperature range: -40°F to 400°F (-40°C to 204°C).
  • Excellent water resistance: Helps protect lubricated and sealed components exposed to moisture and water washout.
  • Low volatility: Suitable for applications where low vapor pressure and low volatility are important.
  • Silicone-based formulation: Made with silicone oil and an inorganic thickener.
  • O-ring and seal lubrication: Suitable for many compatible rubber and plastic O-rings, gaskets and seals.
  • Sealing capability: Designed for vacuum and pressure systems and gasket/seal applications.
  • Electrical insulation properties: Provides dielectric strength and high volume resistivity.
  • Chemical resistance: Generally resistant to dilute acids, dilute alkalines and many aqueous solutions.
  • No intentional PTFE or PFAS: The current DuPont technical data sheet states that MOLYKOTE 111 contains no intentionally added PTFE or PFAS.

Aircraft Maintenance Applications

MOLYKOTE 111 Compound is used where a silicone lubricant or sealant is appropriate for the component and maintenance documentation. Typical applications identified by the manufacturer include:

Application Typical Use
O-rings Lubrication of compatible rubber and plastic O-rings during installation and service
Gaskets and seals Lubrication, sealing and prevention of gasket sticking where compatible
Vacuum systems Sealant and lubricant for compatible vacuum-system components
Pressure systems Sealing and lubrication of compatible pressure-system components
Valves Lubrication of control and pressure plug valves and other compatible valve components
Electrical equipment Insulating compound, gasket sealant and damping applications in appropriate electrical/electronic equipment

The manufacturer also identifies applications involving outdoor equipment, meters, electrical service connections, transformer gaskets and equipment enclosures. These applications are not necessarily aircraft-specific; use on aircraft should be based on the applicable component and maintenance documentation.

O-Ring, Seal & Gasket Lubrication

One of the most common uses for MOLYKOTE 111 is lubrication of compatible O-rings, gaskets and seals. Applying the compound during installation can help reduce friction and prevent sticking of the sealing component to mating surfaces. The manufacturer reports compatibility with many plastics and elastomers, but compatibility should always be confirmed for the specific material and application.

Do not assume that MOLYKOTE 111 is compatible with every aircraft seal material. When servicing an aircraft component, follow the lubricant and seal requirements specified by the aircraft, engine or component manufacturer.

Electrical & Insulating Applications

MOLYKOTE 111 Compound also provides electrical insulation properties. DuPont reports a dielectric strength of 320 volts/mil and high volume resistivity over a broad temperature range. These properties support applications involving compatible electrical connectors, equipment enclosures, gaskets and other electrical or electronic components.

Use only where the applicable equipment or aircraft documentation permits a silicone compound. Silicone contamination can interfere with subsequent painting or finishing operations.

Important Compatibility & Use Limitations

  • Do not use with liquid oxygen (LOX): DuPont specifically states that MOLYKOTE 111 should not be used in applications requiring LOX compatibility.
  • Do not apply to surfaces that will be painted or finished: Silicone contamination can prevent coatings from adhering properly.
  • Verify elastomer compatibility: Although MOLYKOTE 111 is compatible with many plastics and elastomers, the specific seal or O-ring material must be evaluated for the application.
  • Verify grease compatibility: Do not assume that MOLYKOTE 111 can be mixed with another lubricant simply because both are silicone-based or used on similar components.
  • Follow aircraft maintenance documentation: The aircraft, engine or component manufacturer's approved lubricant requirement takes precedence over a general application recommendation.

DuPont specifically warns against use where LOX compatibility is required and recommends evaluating the compound under actual end-use conditions before specification.

Application & Handling

MOLYKOTE 111 Compound can be applied by hand, brushing or wiping, or with appropriately designed automated equipment. DuPont notes that certain grease-gun designs may seize when used with the product and recommends testing the equipment before use.

For detailed handling, safety and application instructions, refer to the current manufacturer technical data sheet and SDS before use.

Shelf Life & Storage
