Solvents & Alcohol

Aircraft solvents and alcohols are used for cleaning, degreasing, surface preparation, residue removal, and other maintenance applications. BAC carries solvents including isopropyl alcohol and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), along with other solvent products used in aviation maintenance and industrial applications.

Solvents vary significantly in evaporation rate, solvency, flammability, material compatibility, and handling requirements. Select the solvent according to the specific cleaning or preparation task and the manufacturer's recommendations.

Solvents for Aircraft Maintenance

Solvents are used throughout aircraft maintenance to remove contaminants and prepare surfaces before repairs, painting, bonding, sealing, and other work. The appropriate solvent depends on the contaminant and the substrate being cleaned.

Isopropyl Alcohol

Sunnyside Isopropyl Alcohol 99% is an anhydrous, fast-evaporating solvent. BAC lists the product as meeting TT-I-735A Grades A and B.

High-purity isopropyl alcohol can be useful for cleaning and surface preparation where its solvent properties and rapid evaporation are appropriate. Verify compatibility with the specific material and application before use.

Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK)

Sunnyside Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) is a strong solvent used for applications requiring greater solvency than alcohol-based cleaners. Its use should be based on the compatibility of the solvent with the material and the specific maintenance procedure.

MEK is a hazardous and flammable chemical. Review the current SDS and product documentation and follow appropriate workplace, storage, handling, and disposal requirements.

Solvent Selection for Surface Preparation

When using a solvent before painting, bonding, sealing, or other finishing work, consider:

• Substrate compatibility: Verify that the solvent will not damage the material, coating, seal, plastic, composite, or other surface.
• Contaminant: Match the solvent's cleaning ability to the oil, grease, adhesive, coating, or residue being removed.
• Evaporation: Consider how quickly the solvent evaporates and whether residue could remain.
• Subsequent process: Confirm that the cleaned surface is suitable for the next operation.

Hazmat Shipping

Some solvents are classified as hazardous materials for transportation. BAC identifies applicable products with a hazmat designation. Hazmat items ship via FedEx Ground and are subject to a separate hazmat fee; BAC does not offer hazardous-material shipments by air for these products.
