Description

3M™ Scotch-Brite™ Hand Pads are commonly used throughout aircraft maintenance to clean, condition, deburr, and prepare surfaces for inspection, repair, sealing, bonding, and painting. Their nonwoven construction provides controlled material removal and consistent surface conditioning while allowing technicians to work around contours, edges, and difficult-to-reach areas.

Scotch-Brite™ hand pads are available in different abrasive grades to provide everything from aggressive cleaning and deburring to gentle surface conditioning and fine finishing. Selecting the appropriate grade helps technicians achieve the desired surface condition without unnecessarily removing material.

3M™ Scotch-Brite™ Hand Pad Part Number Abrasive / Grade Color Characteristics Best For / Typical Aircraft Maintenance Use
Heavy Duty Hand Pad 7440 Medium grade aluminum oxide Brown The most aggressive and durable pad in this group. Its super-dense construction provides excellent durability and cutting action for demanding applications. Heavy-duty cleaning, deburring, removal of corrosion and surface buildup, and aggressive finishing where greater material removal is required.
Light Cleansing Hand Pad 7445 Fine mineral abrasive White A mild abrasive with a conformable web designed for gentle cleaning and light surface conditioning. Provides a fine finish with reduced aggressiveness. Light cleaning, gentle surface conditioning, final finishing, and applications where minimizing surface alteration is important.
General Purpose Hand Pad 7447 Aluminum oxide abrasive Maroon Combines flexibility with effective cutting action and precise hand control. Provides a useful balance between cleaning power and finishing capability. General-purpose cleaning, surface preparation, oxidation removal, scuffing, and finishing of metal and other maintenance surfaces.
Ultra Fine Hand Pad 7448 Ultra-fine abrasive Light Gray Flexible and durable for long service life. Conforms to contours and reaches tight areas. Can be used as an alternative to steel wool for many surface-conditioning applications. Fine metal conditioning, paint preparation, light surface finishing, blending, and applications requiring a very fine, uniform surface.

Choosing the Right Scotch-Brite™ Hand Pad

The appropriate Scotch-Brite™ hand pad depends primarily on the amount of material removal and the desired surface finish. The 7440 Heavy Duty Hand Pad is suited to the most aggressive cleaning and deburring, while the 7447 General Purpose Hand Pad provides a versatile balance of cutting action and control. For lighter cleaning and conditioning, the 7445 Light Cleansing Hand Pad provides a gentler abrasive action. The 7448 Ultra Fine Hand Pad is intended for fine conditioning and finishing where a smooth, uniform surface is desired.

For aircraft maintenance applications, technicians should select the least aggressive abrasive that will effectively accomplish the task. This helps provide controlled surface preparation while reducing unnecessary material removal. Always follow the aircraft manufacturer's maintenance instructions, approved repair procedures, and applicable product recommendations for the specific surface and application.
